Location: The mural is at 7139 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22046.
About the Mural:
The Tinner Hill area holds a significant place in the history of Falls Church. To honor the contributions of this vibrant community and its leaders, the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundationcommissioned a mural. Several talented artists submitted their designs, and the project was awarded to Arlington artist Bryan King. The mural features prominent figures such as Joseph Tinner and Dr. E. B. Henderson, who, along with other community members, fought against segregation. Their organization received the first rural charter of the NAACP, marking a pivotal moment in civil rights history.

Join us on Friday, March 28th from 6 to 9pm at Clare & Don’s Beach Shack.
• 7pm: Speeches from City leaders • 8pm: “Hardware & History” Trivia • 9pm: White Elephant Hardware Gift Exchange
Bring your favorite hardware in a gift bag to share!
Brown’s Hardware has been open for 142 years, since 1883. First serving as a grocery and general store, at one point providing community telephone services to the only doctor in town. John’s Brown’s grandson Hugh Brown ran the store until his own death at the age of 92 in 2018 with “honesty, kindness, and hard work”, as John Taylor, the current owner describes. John had worked at Brown’s since 1997 and took the mantle of ownership in 2018 after Hugh’s passing.
“The most important thing about the hardware store is taking care of the community” – John Taylor, Owner of Brown’s Hardware.
“I was struck by seeing a wall of Kiwanis Little League Sponsorships since 1985. These smiling kids are now fully grown adults. It had me reflecting on the perpetuity of time and place, constantly changing so slowly we don’t notice it day to day. But over time, core characteristics and core values remain, wearing different faces and moving through different hands over the generations.” – Olivia Jeffers, Owner Karma Yoga.
Falls Church City has always been a little bit quirky and independent. On the one hand trailblazing, being one of the first Virginia school districts to voluntarily integrate – on the other hand preserving our trees and protecting our space from over-development, while balancing the need to evolve and grow. If you walk down West Broad, you’ll see many owner-operated stores and independent businesses that create thriving and valuable third-spaces for the community.
“Brown’s Hardware has quite literally been a shining remnant of the spirit of what Falls Church has always represented since becoming an independent city in 1949, humbly yet efficiently serving the community in a veritable mutual admiration society.” Nick Benton, Owner of Falls Church News-Press.
