Detailed Information

The State Theatre is a restaurant and concert venue in Falls Church, Virginia, that opened in 1936 and operated as a popular movie house until the late 1980s. A multi-million dollar restoration in the late 1990s turned it into a venue for live music and private events.

The State Theatre’s history dates back to 1936 when it was first constructed as the flagship location of the Neighborhood Theatre, a regional movie theater operator. Reportedly the first theater on the East Coast to have central air conditioning, it played blockbusters until 1988, when it closed. In the late 1990s, it was purchased and underwent a multimillion-dollar remodel to accommodate full-service dining, standing and dancing in the auditorium and as an events hall and music theatre, but much of its original charm remained, including the same theatrical stage, art deco design and movie theater seating in the balcony. In the lobby, a mini museum showcases old photographs, letters and candy boxes throughout the theater’s history.

Today, the State Theatre hosts modern artists, comedians, and 80s and 90s-inspired dance parties. It is also an event rental venue and has even been a wedding spot. The theater has two bars and a full-service restaurant added to the interior. The restaurant serves wine and beer as well as classics like fries, nachos and chicken tenders.

There’s something for everyone at The State Theatre: rock ‘n’ roll, country, indie, blues, comedy, dance, and stand-up comedy. View the full dining menu, check out upcoming shows and purchase tickets today!
