History: On June 22, 1861, aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe inflated his spy balloon at the DC Gasworks and walked it out to Taylor’s Tavern. Over the next two days, Lowe embarked on several aerial ascents, one of which was to observe the Confederate forces near the Fairfax Courthouse. This fascinating piece of history is captured in, ‘Images of America: Victorian Falls Church’ by The Victorian Society at Falls Church.
